What is Shamanism?
Animism has been practiced across cultures on every continent for at least 40,000 years. The core beliefs of animism are that everything has a soul and that there are non-corporeal beings called spirits who will interact with the spiritual practitioner(s) of an animist community, a shaman. While beliefs about the spirit world vary across cultures, generally speaking, animists believe that spirits exist outside of space and time in the upper world, the lower world, and/or the middle world. The shamanic practitioner travels to these worlds on a shamanic journey, often with the help of drumming, chanting, breathing, or some other trance-inducing stimulus. Spirits can be counted on to provide spiritual information and, sometimes, to help with healing. The identities, personalities, and dispositions through which the spirits reveal themselves differ from culture to culture and from shaman to shaman. Some cultures see them as agents of the shaman, some cultures see them as higher beings to be pleaded to for mercy, and some see them as partners.

It is the job of the shamanic practitioner to relate the information of the helping spirits to the client or to provide a conduit for healing from the spirit world. Healing is usually done concurrently with traditional methods. Healing journeys can help people overcome past trauma and blocks, assist physical healings, empower people to take the next step, and assist people in claiming their personal power.
Anita Donaldson has been an ordained minister and a shamanic practitioner for over ten years. She considers herself a spiritual pathfinder. It is not her place to tell you what to do, how to live, or even what to believe. Rather, she provides opportunities to experience the Divine in the day to day. She also believes that we are a maturing people and maturing people need choices. The Divine doesn’t care how we approach it as long as we do. Experiencing the Divine is an intimate experience which should be as individualistic as we are.
Soul Retrievals: Sometimes we go through an experience which we may remember or not which cause our souls to believe we are going to die; so the soul leaves a part of itself in the experience. This causes a disjointedness in how we experience ourselves. Psychologists might call this disassociation. Extreme cases can manifest themselves in depression, PTSD, and even death. During a soul retrieval, the shaman collects the part which will aid the individual in furthering their healing and replaces it in the individual. It often is accompanied by instructions or a story which assists the recipient in incorporating the soul part in their lives or explains how the soul part will aid them from that point on.
Power Animal Retrieval: Power loss is experienced as unexplained fear, bad luck, or the inability to access a part of ourselves or to process the world around us. Power is retrieved in the form of an animal or archetype which represents an aspect of ourselves. For instance, Horse is not just a horse but might represent power. Bison might represent abundance. All power animals act as teachers and conduits to the divine and help us to stand in the world as better aspects of ourselves; as well as transform all energy and into beneficial energy. Simply calling the Archetype to us will protect and guide us on our path.
Other Shamanic Healing: Other healing can come in the form of Spiritual Extraction, where that which not belong is removed on the spiritual plane so healing can occur on the physical plane. Energy healing, where the energy of the body is put into balance so healing can occur on the physical plane. Psycho pomp work is work done with the deceased. Sometimes, the spirit of the dead feels a need to cling to something or someone on the physical plane. Psycho pomp work interacts with the deceased spirit to cross over.
